Chaos modifier guide
How to evaluate a Battle Scar before the run
A Battle Scar can change player resources, enemy behavior, shops, treasure, or the encounter itself. Its level is useful for grouping related modifiers, but it is not a complete measure of how dangerous that rule will be for your build.
Read the exact modifier first, then ask which link in your current engine it changes. A rule that is manageable for one loadout can remove the main source of safety or scaling from another, so a universal danger ranking would hide the decision that matters.
Classify what the modifier changes
Sort the wording into a practical scope: starting resources, player stats, enemy stats or affixes, shops and chests, or enemies introduced into the run. This makes unlike effects easier to evaluate without pretending that coins, damage taken, and encounter composition share one numeric scale.
- Check whether the effect is immediate, permanent, or tied to a named event.
- For a series marked with plus signs, compare each exact version instead of assuming only the number changes.
Treat selection weight as relative
The detail page shows a selection weight, not a guaranteed appearance rate. A weight only has meaning alongside the eligible pool and the weights of other available modifiers, so it should not be converted into a standalone percentage. Use it for relative context while keeping the exact effect as the main decision.
- Eligibility can matter as much as the displayed weight.
- Do not read a larger weight as greater combat severity; it describes selection, not impact.
Connect the Scar to the chosen difficulty
Difficulty controls how many Chaos Battle Scars enter the run. Hard reveals one, Nightmare two, and Hell three. Reality starts with three, reveals one more in each chapter, and caps the active count at four, so the same modifier deserves more caution when it must coexist with several others.
- Evaluate combinations for overlapping pressure on the same resource or defensive layer.
- Open the difficulty page to compare the Scar count with treasure and later-chapter enemy rules.
